    To be clear, we don’t have many set-in-stone requirements, and you don’t have to be a native speaker of either English or Chinese, provided you have excellent writing skills.     All positions are based in Shanghai and full-time unless otherwise noted. We offer competitive salary packages.


    【Collaboration Editor】

    Sixth Tone is looking for a multi-skilled, passionate collaboration editor to join its Sixth Tone x project.

    In 2021, Sixth Tone launched the x project to publish translations and cross-publications from its external partners in order to cover a wider range of topics and to introduce excellent Chinese content to an international audience. It also organized the Sixth Tone China Writing Contest that welcomed contributions from writers around the world.

    The x project will grow further in 2023 as Sixth Tone continues to explore forms of collaboration and increase community engagement. To that end, we are seeking someone who can look outward, work actively with other Sixth Tone teams as well as external partners, and maintain a high standard for related content.

    Responsibilities:
    1. Manage Sixth Tone x’s daily publication including content selection, Chinese editing, and collaboration with translators and English-language editors.
    2. Expand Sixth Tone x’s partnership network and maintain smooth communication.
    3. Participate in cross-team projects to plan and execute strategies for promoting Sixth Tone content.
    4. Help other Sixth Tone teams to maximize effects of events such as lectures, screenings, exhibitions, etc.
    5. Collaborate with external partners on special projects and initiatives.

    Requirements:
    1. Native or native-level Chinese and strong English ability.
    2. Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field.
    3. At least two years of relevant full-time work experience. Experience in event planning, project management, and cross-team communication preferred.
    4. Knowledge about Chinese media production and English-language coverage of China. Interest in a wide range of topics like social and cultural issues, business and technology, etc.
    5. Proactive attitude, eagerness for innovation, resilience in the face of challenges, and strong ability to get things done.

    【Editor】

    Sixth Tone is looking for a seasoned, passionate editor.

    Responsibilities:
    1. Attend morning news meetings, and help decide which stories to pursue.
    2. Shepherd other staff through the research and writing process when necessary.
    3. Edit news stories to a ready-to-publish state in a time-efficient manner.
    4. Help develop new editorial projects when needed, and coordinate with members from other teams to optimize stories for audiences.
    5. Support features, visuals, and social media teams with their editing needs on an ad hoc basis.

    Requirements:
    1. Native or native-level English speaker with a keen understanding of Chinese society and culture.
    2. Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, or a related field.
    3. Three to five years of relevant full-time work experience, ideally with China-focused media.
    4. Strong attention to detail and a meticulous approach toward work in general.
    5. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
    6. Good Chinese language skills are desirable.

    【Youth Culture and Trends Reporter】

    Sixth Tone is looking for a passionate, talented reporter to cover our youth culture and trends beat.

    The youth culture reporter is one of the most important positions at Sixth Tone. Since our founding, we have become known for our coverage of China’s millennials and Gen-Z. Covering this beat will involve reporting on everything from viral social media trends, to cutting-edge music, film, and art projects, to longer-term social trends.

    It is a fun and hugely rewarding role, but also a demanding one. We are operating in an increasingly competitive media landscape, and we are looking for a candidate with the motivation and talent to come in and make an immediate contribution to our team.

    Some journalism experience — especially in an English-language environment — is desirable, but a good work ethic, stellar writing skills, and a hunger to improve, get things done, and produce work that makes an impact is even more important.

    Responsibilities:
    1. Attend morning news meetings, and pitch stories on a daily basis.
    2. Build a strong network of contacts in your field, and help Sixth Tone identify important stories before the competition.
    3. Interview people in a range of different circumstances, and do on-the-spot reporting when needed.
    4. Write a variety of stories — from breaking news to long features — in a time-efficient manner.
    5. Cooperate with colleagues and other teams in projects as needed.

    Requirements:
    1. Native Chinese and strong English writing ability.
    2. Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, with 1 to 3 years of relevant working experience.
    3. Demonstrable passion for keeping up-to-date with the daily news cycle.
    4, Good knowledge about Chinese economic and political developments.
    5. Positive attitude, and ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
    6. Willingness to approach people and make phone calls without hesitation.

    【Video journalist】(Internship)

    Responsibilities:
    1. Assist reporters with research, interviews, filming, and video editing work.
    2. Assist editors with video translation work.

    Requirements:
    1. Fluent in English and strong English writing ability.
    2. Basic videography and video editing skills.
    3. Experiences in Adobe Premiere, with experience using After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
    4. Good ability to communicate, cooperation, and work with a team.
    5. Proficiency in research is preferred.

    This job requires a guaranteed internship of two days per week for at least 2 months.
    The internship should last at least 2 months.

    Responsibilities:
    1. Edit social media videos.
    2. Assist reporters and editors with research, interviews, and video editing work.

    Requirements:

    3. Basic knowledge about journalism and social media. Major in journalism preferred.

    【Editorial Director】

    Sixth Tone is seeking a passionate and experienced Editorial Director to manage the daily operations of our editorial department. They will supervise editors and reporters, assign stories, and write and edit copy, while keeping Sixth Tone’s coverage timely, comprehensive, and competitive.

    Responsibilities:
    1. Approving stories and guiding their execution, as well as overseeing the overall quality of published stories.
    2. Editorial oversight, managing both reporters and section editors.
    3. Strategic planning for Sixth Tone’s overall direction.
    4. Proposing and leading innovative projects.
    5. Assist in developing Sixth Tone’s marketing and audience engagement strategies.

    Requirements:
    1. A veteran journalist in major English-language media.
    2. Experience leading a team in a media context is essential; previous experience as an editorial or news director is preferred.
    3. Familiarity with and critical understanding of Chinese current affairs and social issues.
    4. Proficiency in Mandarin is a plus.
